Guembeul and Langue de Barbarie

The 720 ha of the Guembeul Reserve is home to oryx, gazelles (the Saharan dorcas and the dama mhorr), and addax. These native animals were once eradicated from Senegal and the Reserve has worked tirelessly to return these animals to their native home. Guembeul is also home to the African Spurred tortoise (the larges tortoise in Africa), red monkeys, warthogs, monitor lizards, and countless other species of wild animals. With 190 bird species in the reserve, it is also a good place for bird lovers.

The Langue de Barbarie National Park is located 18 km south of Saint Louis in the Gandiol region. The park was created in 1976 for the protection of marine turtles and migratory birds. It covers an area of 2000 ha, and is a rich and diverse ecosystem. The unique combination of the Senegal River, the Langue de Barbarie, sand dunes, mangroves, tidal wetlands, beach and the ocean create an environment teeming with wildlife. With more than 160 species of birds that frequent the park, visitors are encouraged to bird watch. It is a good place for both beginners and ornithologists. For nature lovers, the park is also good place to identify and photograph many species of birds, crabs, lizards, and other animals. Come and discover the marvels that await you.
